Discrimination in sport - what do the associations do about it?
Say no to racism campaign

The term discrimination stands for the discrimination as well as degradation of groups or individuals according to certain values in an offside comparison or due to unreflected or unthought-out attitudes, prejudices as well as emotional associations. This happens on different bases and aims at different goals.

There are cases of discrimination in private life, at work and in sport.

The aim, however, is to create a tense atmosphere, to unsettle the discriminated and to create an advantage for the perpetrator. In sport, discrimination is often based on racism, homophobia, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and the degradation of the disabled, women or certain minorities. There are many sad examples of this, so the question is what sports federations are doing about it.

"Say No To Racism"

"Say No To Racism" is a slogan which is used by all sports federations in the world. The slogan is particularly well known in football. It is on the jerseys of the players to see the playing field and the entire stadium. Fans watching the games from home on television will see advertising with the slogan against racism.

But is it really so urgently necessary to make viewers of a game aware that racism is wrong? Indeed it is, there have been endless examples of racism in football and other sports.

There are examples around the globe, racism is not a German problem. For example, there was the case of Boateng, who, as a player in the Italian league at AC Milan in 2013, left the pitch after permanent racist remarks in the middle of a game.

The game was abandoned when the other players gradually left the pitch. Another famous scene from abroad was in the Spanish league of Dani Alves, who played for FC Barcelona.

Alves was thrown with several bananas during an away match against another Spanish team. He reacted cool and ate a banana without paying any attention to the throwers.

Racial discrimination in football and other sports

Especially in football racism always plays a part and has meanwhile reached a level which cannot simply be concealed anymore. In the media, it is often the case that discriminatory statements and actions have been made by fans against the players on the field.

They are treated in a pejorative way because of their ethnic background, skin colour and appearance. That is what is happening in all the leagues, in all the countries of the world.

It is not only the first German, Spanish, Italian or English league, but also goes as far as the district leagues.

This makes it clear once again that racism and hatred are not only to be found in sport or especially in football, but in every society, in every country in every age group.

That is why it is so important to deal comprehensively with the problem. Discrimination has become an everyday occurrence.

Discrimination in other sports

Another well-known case of discrimination and racism had occurred in the USA. The scandal about the billionaire basketball team owner Donald Sterling, whose sentences were recorded and published.

They were only short and few sentences, but they had penetrating power and serious consequences for the American Basketball League and Sterling.

He told his wife not to upload the photos taken with former basketball pro Magic Johnson to the Internet. He also said that she should not be involved with black men.

This was a recent example from the American Basketball League. It should also not be forgotten that apartheid still existed until a few decades ago.

Whether it is South Africa or America, discrimination against dark-skinned people is still there. Since 1947, when the first black basketball player Jackie Robinson joined the NBA in 1947, there has been some improvement, but there is still a great need for reappraisal.

Discrimination in society

As already explained, it is not uncommon for people to be attacked on the street. Both abroad and in this country. Everyday racism is not a fictitious term, but has a clear meaning, which is definable and assignable.

In addition, everyone probably knows cases of it. This refers not only to racism or xenophobia, but also to minorities, women, homosexuals and disabled people.

This applies not only to equal opportunities in working life or payroll accounting, but to all areas of life. More information on sports on this Link.
