Durante and Williams exit Phoenix

Published on: 11 June 2019

Wellington Phoenix have been hit by the double departure of captain Andrew Durante and striker David Williams.

The pair have left the A-League club after their deals expired, with Durante heading to expansion club Western United to link up with former coach Mark Rudan.

Roy Krishna, who won the double of Golden Boot and Johnny Warren Medal as A-League player of the year, has already left.

It leaves new coach Ufuk Talay with a big job to rebuild his squad for 2019-20.

Durante, who joined Wellington in 2008, had made 273 A-League appearances for the club.

The 37-year-old confirmed on social media reports that indicated he was leaving the Phoenix.

It will be a double blow to them that he's going to United, after they lost coach Rudan to them at the end of last season.

Rudan, who had been in charge of the Phoenix for just one season when he guided them into the Finals Series, left for personal reasons and was swiftly hired by the new Melbourne club.

He lured keeper Filip Kurto - who won the A-League goalkeeper of the year award with Wellington last season - to the team, as well as midfielder Max Burgess.

Durante joined the Phoenix from Newcastle Jets after winning the A-League title in 2008 and his 313 appearances are the most by any A-League player.

Born in Australia, he switched allegiances to New Zealand in 2013 and went on to play 24 internationals for the All Whites.

Williams, who has rejected a new contract, will be moving on after scoring 11 goals in his only season in Wellington.

Talay must now replace what had been a strike partnership yielding 30 goals in the season, as well as his outstanding keeper and captain.

So far, the Phoenix have brought in All Whites goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic on a two-year deal as well as Young Socceroos defender Walter Scott.

Wellington Phoenix are 25/1 to win the 2020 A-League Grand Final.

Meanwhile, Australia are 23/20 to win their next game at the Women's World Cup against Brazil, who are 11/5 with the draw 5/2.
