Techiman Eleven Wonders Chief Executive Officer, Albert Commey, has opposed the idea of continuing the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League season behind closed doors.

The 2019/20 football season has been suspended since March this year due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) recently met the Presidential committee on COVID-19 and proposed continuing the season behind closed doors.

This has raised some questions among club administrators as to whether Premier League teams can bear the cost of playing behind closed doors as clubs continue to seek for support amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has also announced that it cannot afford the cost of hosting games behind closed doors at the various stadia should the season continue behind closed doors.

According to Albert Commey, playing the league without spectators will have adverse effects on the clubs both psychologically and financially.

“Playing every game comes with a cost. Will I be able to break even if I play in an empty stadium? I will never run a venture that will run at a lost. People are saying if there are spectators there we even run at a lost. If you play football with spectators around it generates so many things, he said in an interview.

“The excitement and energy generated by the spectators attract sponsors. Sponsors come on board because they want people who can promote their product”

He added that the GFA should engage clubs on this issue before taking a decision to continue the season.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak Board Member and Supporters Chief, Elvis Herman Hesse has also opposed the proposal by the GFA to continue the season behind closed doors.

“I don’t support the idea of playing behind closed doors. Maybe I will get the opportunity to watch but playing behind closed doors is a no for me”.

“The GFA shouldn’t cancel the season but they should rather engage the clubs on the way forward”.
