England defender Rio Ferdinand to miss Ghana friendly

England boss Fabio Capello could be without skipper Rio Ferdinand for the crunch friendly against Ghana later this month.

The Black Stars will clash with the Three Lions in the first match between the two countries at senior level.

Both sides are expected to use all their top players for the high-charged game scheduled for 29 March.

But Ferdinand, who plays for Manchester United and one of the key England players, is likely not to play in the game.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes his centre-back won’t return from his calf injury until the week after the game at Wembley.

“Rio has been doing a bit of running. He will be ready for the game after the internationals. I wouldn’t have thought he would have a chance before that,” said Ferguson.

“I don’t think it would be wise for him to be called up by England. He hasn’t played for us since January.”

His absence adds to Capello’s injury woes, with vice-captain Steven Gerrard also out for a month following groin surgery.
