EPL clubs to seek clarification on squad sizes & player replacements on Thursday

Premier League clubs will seek clarification on squad sizes and player replacements at Thursday’s shareholders’ meeting.

Clubs submitted their revised 25-man squad lists in February following the closure of the winter transfer window.

However, some players who were omitted because of long-term injuries are now fit and there are several clubs who wish to make alterations.

They will also ask for clarity on the eligibility of players returning from foreign or lower-league loans and whether they can be added to squad lists if deemed necessary.

Another consideration is players who could indicate they do not wish to play because of concerns over Covid-19 and, if so, clubs want to know if replacements are permitted. Likewise if a player tests positive for the virus.

The notion of removing the 25-man limit during the remaining matches is complicated by the restrictions on testing for Covid-19.

But sources have told us that clubs will argue for some relaxing of the rules given the condensed nature of the fixtures and the shortened preparation time, especially as today’s return to contact training means the league is on course for a mid-June resumption.
