Erik ten Hag told to pick Fred over Bruno Fernandes in Manchester United midfield

Erik ten Hag has been told by ex-Manchester United defender Paul Parker that he should choose Fred to start in midfield against Everton on Sunday.

The Brazilian midfielder was given little more than 15 minutes to impress Ten Hag in Nicosia on Thursday night during United's less than routine 3-2 victory over Omonia. After falling behind to a Karim Ansarifard strike, United turned the game on its head in the second half thanks to second half substitutes Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Nikolas Panagiotou pulled a goal back to ensure it was a nervy ending for the Reds, but they managed to get the job done to secure an important three points in the Europa League. During his cameo, Fred was unlucky not to add to the scoring when his shot was excellently turned away by Fabiano and, according to Parker, he did enough to deserve a start.

Speaking to BeMyBet, the 58-year-old said: " Fred, at this moment in time, deserves the opportunity to play. He is a really good player.

"In my opinion, he should play instead of [Bruno] Fernandes who is moaning and waving his arms at his teammates all the time. With Fred on the pitch, you will get someone who is quicker across the floor, someone who is very clever in how he defends.

"He doesn’t give away many faults, but he puts people under pressure. If the opportunity comes along, I am sure that he and his agent are considering moving to a new club in January.

"Fred has been like a super pro at Man United. He is not moaning, and he has never really been a problem. You’ve got to say to yourself, as a manager, he can’t be doing that bad if he is playing regularly on the Brazil side."

United return to action on Sunday when they visit Goodison Park in a 7pm kick off.
