Lyon’s hopes of progressing in the Coupe de France were dashed in a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to fifth-tier Bourgoin-Jallieu on Wednesday.
The Ligue 1 side, favorites to advance at Stade Pierre Rajon, faced a tough battle after an early mistake led to Bourgoin’s first goal. Mehdi Moujetzky capitalized on Lyon’s defensive lapse, but Lyon equalized through Nemanja Matic before the break. Bourgoin regained the lead with a goal from Georges Mikautadze in the second half, setting up a tense finale.
The match turned even more dramatic when Lyon, under pressure, made costly errors. Moujetzky punished a poor backpass from Warmed Omari, and the game went to penalties. Lyon relied on their veterans, Alexandre Lacazette and Corentin Tolisso, but both saw their efforts saved by Bourgoin goalkeeper Ronan Jay.
Lyon fought back with Moussa Niakhaté's successful conversion, and Ernest Nuamah also found the net. Despite their efforts, Lyon could not recover from their early deficit, losing 4-2 in the shootout, sending Bourgoin-Jallieu through to the next round.
