Michael Essien believes Chelsea can still win a trophy despite their disappointing performance this season.

The Ghana international who is currently on-loan at Spanish giants real Madrid is backing his club to salvage what is left off the season.

Chelsea began the campaign as European champions but failed to make it past the group stage of the Champions League.

Their highly inconsistent form so far this term has seen them challenging for just a top four finish the English top flight.

The Blues are however a game away from another FA Cup final following their 1-0 win over Manchester United on Monday.

And Essien believes the new-look Chelsea can get something meaningful out of the hurtful season.

"They can still win trophies in the cups this season so people shouldn't write them off just yet," the 30-year-old told The Sport Review.

"I have followed Chelsea all season, and although it hasn't been as planned at the start of the season, I think it's down to the fact it is a transitional season.

"A lot of the players from the past are not there and there are new players. It takes time to blend all of them and create a team straight away.

"I am sure the team will know each other very well and the good times will be back.

“The Ghana FA is interested in any player who shows the desire to play for us.

“If we think the player can help us of course we will pursue the nationality switch.”

Essien is likely to return to Chelsea when his loan deal at Madrid expires at the end of the current campaign.
