Michael Essien is confident that Asamoah Gyan will make a huge impact in the English Premier League after his flying start for Sunderland.

Chelsea ace Essien has Ghana’s flag bearer in the Premier League for the past five years but that position could be threatened by Gyan’s early showing.

The striker has scored five goals since joining Sunderland from French side Rennes in August which has given him rave reviews.

Gyan scored and excelled in their shocking 3-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this month and Essien reveals their debates before the game.

"We were texting a lot before the game and he insisted he will score and he did," Essien said.

"I am happy for him. He has come into a new League and is scoring a lot of goals which is always a good way to start.

“I think he can do good for a long time.”

Gyan has been nominated for several awards for his performances at the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.
