Ghana midfielder Michael Essien will be given a backroom staff role at the World Cup despite being ruled out of the tournament due to injury.

The Ghana FA on Thursday announced the Chelsea ace has lost the fitness battle and can only return to the pitch at the end of July.

Essien is expected to stay with Ghana's pre-World Cup squad in Paris, France and for the  international warm-up games against Holland and Latvia.

In a similar role as David Bechkam for England, Essien, according to the report will help train the side and boost confidence as Fabio Capello has decided to do.

Also in 2008, Ghana captain Stephen Appiah was handed a similar after injury ruled him out of the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.
