Michael Essien became only the fourth Ghanaian to win a Uefa Champions League title after Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich 4-3 on penalties on Saturday.

The match had to travel all the way to the lottery of penalty kicks after the game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of exhilarating football at the Alianz Arena.

The 29-year-old midfielder however sat out the entire game as he was an unused substitute.

It was a perfect way to atone for their 2008 Champions League heartache where they lost to Manchester United in sudden death of the shootouts at the Luzhniki Stadium in Russia.

Essien has made only 14 starts - only two in the Champions League for the Blues this term since returning from a lengthy injury layoff in January.

He now joins a distinguished list of of Ghanaians including Abedi Pele, Sammy Kuffour and Sulley Muntari to have won the giant trophy.
