The richest tournament in cricket is back
Two new franchises, a revised format, updated rules, fresh faces and plenty to look forward to ahead of the final on 29 May. This is the tournament where dreams are made, where rags become riches and where a global audience
Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans join the existing eight sides to make the cash-rich league a 10-team tournament.
There will be a total of 74 matches in IPL 2022. The ten teams have been divided into two groups of five with each side playing 14-games (seven home and away) in the league stage.
Each team will play five teams twice and the remaining four teams once. Each team will play twice against teams in their group and the corresponding team in the other group. Then they play once against all other teams in the other group.
How they line up
Group A includes Mumbai Indians (five titles), Kolkata Knight Riders (2), Rajasthan Royals (1), Delhi Capitals (0) and Lucknow Super Giants (new). Group B involves Chennai Super Kings (4), Sunrisers Hyderabad (1), Royal Challengers Bangalore (0), Punjab Kings (0) and Gujurat Titans (new).
As previously, four teams will qualify for the playoff stage with the top two participating in the Qualifier where the winner goes straight into the final. The loser of that match takes on the winner of the 3rd and 4th Eliminator match for a second opportunity to make the last two.
Mumbai and Pune the hosts
With the tournament back in India the venues have been restricted to Mumbai and Pune. This is to avoid air travel with the COVID-19 pandemic still a risk. T0he BCCI has announced that 25% capacity fans are welcome back into the grounds.
Four venues will host the 70 group stage matches – Wankhede Stadium (20), Brabourne Stadium (15), DY Patil Stadium (20) all in Mumbai and the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune stages 15.
The venues for the playoff games is yet to be announced.

IPL Winner 2022
It’s tough to pick a standout side, particularly after the recent Mega Auction has re-jigged the squads, there are two new teams and plenty of new faces.
It’s time for the Delhi Capitals to stop knocking on the door and to step through to their first title. They are well-balanced and fast bowler Anrich Nortje could be key along with experienced opener David Warner.
A longer priced option is the Gujurat Titans newbies. They spent big on match-winners Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan, but they’ll thrive if other squad members like Vijay Shankar and Matthew Wade step up. They have a chance if Hardik stays fit. The all-rounder was not able to bowl last season and didn’t produce with the bat. With both strings to his bow available this time he can influence matches and will always be a play for Player of the Match markets.
Top IPL 2022 Batter
Shubman Gill is one of the best young batters in world cricket. The 22-year-old has shone before with KKR and may light up this tournament as the opener with Gujurat Titans. He takes everything in his stride and will be towards the top end of the scoring charts, if not top.
There is an added incentive for Gill success. He is currently on the periphery of the India T20I side, and a strong IPL could see him make the cut for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.
He has now played 58 matches in the IPL after debuting in 2018. 15.00 is a tempting price.
Elsewhere, Australia’s David Warner could be influential as opener after the Mega Auction saw him move to Delhi Capitals. A two-time Orange Cap winner, the move could well relight the fire.
Devon Conway will debut for CSK after making a strong impression for New Zealand over the last two years. He could well have a storming couple of months.
Top IPL 2022 Bowler
The danger with the bowling markets is that the best bowlers, like Jasprit Bumrah and Rashid Khan, are often played out. Teams get ultra-defensive against them to avoid losing wickets and negate their threat. Other bowlers then take wickets when the assault is on.
The two mentioned will be thereabouts, but they are short-priced favourites that may well not deliver.
Tymal Mills is interesting. He has unfinished business in the IPL after under-achieving previously. The Mumbai tracks may suit him and at 26.00 he’s worth an e/w punt (four places). If he stays fit throughout the tournament his pace will take wickets.
Some longer priced specials
There are a few special bets with William Hill that appeal at long prices…
Jos Buttler to be the top IPL 2022 batter along with Kagiso Rabada to be top tournament bowler is 141.00 and both have serious chances of delivering. Buttler is now away from Test cricket and will be concentrating on batting against the white ball. Rabada is one of the very best fast bowlers in world cricket, with previous IPL success.
Rishabh Pant to be the top Delhi Capitals IPL 2022 batter has been enhanced to 4.00. He is a player that has every chance of delivering. The 24-year-old has taken the world by storm. He is one of a few players that can step up and win matches on his own.
The DC captain responded to the responsibility of leading the team in 2021 and there is no reason to expect him to fail. He very rarely does.
Already taking David Warner to be leading tournament batter? The Aussie will be in competition with Pant in this DC market, so bear that in mind. Pant could provide some cover if Warner fails to deliver.
