Everton boss Martinez pleased with spirit for Crystal Palace point

Everton boss Roberto Martinez was satisfied with their 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.

Everton survived the dismissal of James McCarthy to earn a point.

Martinez said: “It is always difficult to come here and cope with their direct play. When you have to do that with 10 men over 45 minutes, which it was with the injury time, it was a positive performance with resilience, hard work and understanding of the discipline required.

“Over the whole game we had as many chances as them. Seamus Coleman, Ross Barkley, Ramiro Funes Mori all had chances and in that respect it was a level game."

The Blues boss also explained why he thought McCarthy's second caution for a block on Yannick Bolasie was harsh on the midfielder, before suggesting that his side could have had a penalty for a trip on Seamus Coleman.

He added: “When I was watching live I thought it was a yellow card. When you watch it more carefully, you see the opposite. It is very, very harsh. Bolasie is very clever and goes through McCarthy, James' body can't disappear and I thought Bolasie was looking for the contact. He didn't intend to get in the way of the Crystal Palace player.

“I thought [Seamus] was very honest. There was contact but he gets up very quickly. I have seen them given and I thought it could have been a penalty but I understand the referee's decision."
