Everton plot move to sign defender James Carragher - son of Liverpool legend Jamie - from Wigan

Everton want to sign James Carragher — son of Liverpool legend Jamie — and hope to conclude a deal for him this summer.

The 18-year-old central defender has made excellent progress at Wigan, whom he joined in 2017 after a spell at Liverpool’s Academy. He is currently on a scholarship but those terms expire at the end of the season.

Everton, who face West Ham tomorrow, are prepared to offer him his first professional contract and pay Wigan a compensation fee.

It would also see him make the opposite journey to his father, who switched his allegiance from supporting Everton as a child to become a Liverpool player.

Carlo Ancelotti, meanwhile, has stressed he did not turn down the chance to join Roma. There had been speculation that Everton’s manager — who played for Roma — was a target for the Serie A side but they have since appointed Jose Mourinho.

‘It’s not true,’ said Ancelotti. ‘They know I have a contract and I am not available. They made a good choice. I received a lot of offers in the past but never Roma.’
