Ex-Atletico star Augusto: I wish VAR had existed at 2016 Champions League final

Atletico Madrid's 2016 Champions League final defeat in Milan still scars Augusto Fernandez.

Referee Mark Clattenburg recently admitted that Real Madrid's opening goal, which came through Sergio Ramos, shouldn't have stood as the defender was offside.

The decision haunts Atletico to this day, particularly with that being their second Champions League final defeat in three seasons and with both having come against their most bitter rivals.

"I wish VAR had existed for the Milan final," Augusto said to A Diario.

"The mistake [to allow Real Madrid's opener] was fundamental.

"The referee just acknowledged what everyone saw, but football is like that and mistakes happen."

That game still gives the 34-year-old nightmares.

"I still have a thorn in my side because of that game," he admitted.

"I don't watch it so that it doesn't hurt me again.

"I have no regrets or remorse and wouldn't change anything.

"If it hadn't been for some little events then the trophy was ours."

The Argentine left Atletico for China in 2018, which he confesses wasn't a decision he made for footballing reasons.

"I want to compete again and I'm looking forward to the transfer window opening," he said.

"I went to China to rediscover certain feelings after the injury and, I won't lie, because of the contract."

Augusto does have offers on the table and is considering a return to Argentina to play with one of his former clubs, Velez Sarsfield.

"I'm deciding whether to return to Velez for my last few years or to stay in Spain" he said.

"I'm in talks with them."
