Ex-Barca star Valdes named head coach of Spanish minnows Unio Atletica d'Horta

Victor Valdes is to take the plunge into football management next season after the Barcelona legend was announced as manager of fourth tier club Unio Atletica d'Horta.

The 38-year-old has worked as a coach since hanging up his gloves in 2017, having taken on roles at his former club as well as Moratalaz. He left his role as academy coach at Barcelona in October 2019.

'We hope you have lots of success at the head of our club,' the Spanish minnows announced on social media.

Valdes' next challenge will present a huge change of scenery to the luxuries he was afforded in Catalonia. Unio Atletica d'Horta's stadium has a capacity of just 2,500 and the club have never competed at a higher level than the third tier.

Last year, the Spaniard had a very public spat with La Masia director Patrick Kluivert, leading to his sacking as the academy's under-19 coach.

'FC Barcelona have informed Víctor Valdés on Monday that he is no longer U19A coach and no longer employed by the Club,' a Barca statement read in October last year.

Since leaving the club in 2014, Valdes' playing career took a rapid decline. After two failed years at Manchester United and a brief loan spell at Belgian side Standard Liege, the Spanish World Cup winner retired after playing for Middlesbrough three years ago.
