Ex-Ghana FA boss Ben Koufie is very optimistic that Andre Ayew will be crowned the 2011 African Footballer of the year on Thursday.

The 22-year-old has been named in a final three-man shortlist for the prestigious individual accolade in Accra on 22 December.

But the Olympic Marseille winger must vie for the coveted prize with competitions from Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure and Mali's midfielder Seydou Keita.

He was voted the BBC African Footballer of the year last week Friday after riveting performances for both club and country.

The ex-GFA Capo remains optimistic about his chances.

He told Accra-based Citi FM: "I think he's a sure candidate for the award judging from what he has done over the period."

"If you look at his performance from the youth level through to the senior team, he has been consistent and so if he wins it won't be a surprise to anyone.

"His displays for his club side have also been magnificent. He recently won the BBC award and if that award is exclusively chosen by fans, then you should imagine what they think of him.

"He deserves the accolade and so we should all pray for him to clinch it."

If Andre is crowned the best on the continent at the gala on Thursday, it will be another historic achievement for the 22-year-old budding talent.

His father Abedi Pele won the award on three occasions.
