Former Ghana U-20 captain Alex Opoku has confirmed that the Black Starlets team that won the 1991 FIFA U-17 World Cup were overaged.
The Black Starlets defeated Spain in the final by 1-0 to win the country first continental title in that tournament hosted by Italy 29 years ago.
Emmanuel Duah scored the only goal of the game to hand Ghana and Africa the title.
The retired Ghanaian footballer, now turned Pastor admitted he was three years older than the actual age for the competition.
"We were more than the age during our time. Not only Ghana but some other countries which participated in the tournament also engaged in the age cheating”, Alex Opoku admitted in an interview on Happy FM.
“I couldn't really tell my age at that time because my mother could not keep a record of my birth date. But when I compared, I was three or four years older when I played for the Ghana U-17 team”, he added.
Ghana has won the FIFA U-17 World Cup title twice in 1991 and 1995.
