Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has jumped to the defence of Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo following criticism of his performance against Southampton.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was introduced in the second half as the Red Devils secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the St Mary's on Saturday.

Despite the victory, social media users took to Twitter to single out the Portuguese superstar for criticisms.

But Gyan felt Ronaldo was unfairly criticised as he played a huge role in the victory against Southampton.

"Massa Massa he came on in the difficult moment of the game. He when winning the air duels for the team. He should have done better in the last counter attack but he fought today to make sure day secure the winner. U just want to talk about him cos u have to comment," wrote Asamoah Gyan in a reply to a Tweet by journalist Owuraku Ampofo.

The Joy Sports broadcaster wrote: "Ronaldo justified why he’s not ready to start games yet with his cameo today."

Asamoah Gyan could reunite with Cristiano Ronaldo should he make the Black Stars squad for the World Cup in Qatar.
