Former Black Stars coach Mariano Barreto has slapped in his application to become coach of the Zambian national team, GHANAsoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.

The 54-year-old Portuguese leads a list of over 20 expatriate coaches who have put themselves forward for the vacant job following the sacking of Italian Dario Bonetti days after qualifying the Chipolopolo to next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Barreto was in charge of both Ghana's senior team and the national U-23 side between 2003- 2004.

He started the Black Stars campaign to its first ever World Cup appearance in Germany 2006 at the preliminary stage but left midstream under strange circumstances.

He actually boarded the car of a local sports journalist on his way to the airport after recording an impressive 3-0 win over South Africa in Kumasi on his way to join his native club Maritimo where he stayed for a year.

He then moved to the Gulf state to manage Al-Nasr and then returned to Europe as assistant coach at Dynamo Moscow.

He is currently the coach of Saudi club Al-Qadisiyah and is now set to slug it out with heavyweights Henk Ten Carte and Klaus Toppmoeller for the vacant post.

The Zambian FA will hold a meeting next week to shortlist the applicants after which an interview would be conducted.
