Former Roma sports chief Walter Sabatini insists they tried to convince Luis Enrique to stay.
The Barcelona coach lasted less than a season in Italy.
Sabatini recalled: "He is an exceptional man who came to Roma to bring his football.
"We had a great team, but it was incomplete and he helped it. There was a game in December, one in Naples where I thought that this was the proper way, after that performance it was not always matched.
"His football has worked elsewhere, we tried to keep him but he wanted to conclude the contract."
