Ex-Spurs chairman imposes a blanket 20 percent wage cut across the club

The former Tottenham chairman has been discussing the club's decision to furlough some of their non-playing staff.

Lord Sugar has taken to social media to talk about Tottenham Hotspur's actions in furloughing staff and imposing a blanket 20 per cent wage cut across the club.

Spurs have come under fire from their fans and the general public for their decision to cut wages for their 550 non-playing staff and furlough around 40 per cent of them to take advantage of the government's relief scheme.

That announcement from Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has come under even greater scrutiny after Liverpool reversed their own decision to furlough staff after the public outcry.

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust came out with their own plea for the club to change their decision on Monday night.

"We have been saying consistently @SpursOfficial - pause and rethink. We are now saying it clearly and in public - do not further damage the club’s reputation, listen to your fans," they tweeted.

Lord Sugar, who sold his stake in Tottenham to ENIC almost 20 years ago, to discuss the club and lack of decision from players across the Premier League on social media.

"People need to understand most clubs run from hand to mouth on income coming in to pay players/staff," he tweeted.

"If the shut down carries on for months some clubs will be insolvent and go bust.Gordon Taylor is no help telling players clubs are owned by billionaires don't take cuts."

One user suggested: "Still doesn't justify furloughing club staff on low incomes whilst still paying players full pay though does it?"

The former Spurs chairman responded: "Agreed. I think players should agree a cut in pay to help fund their colleagues on the non playing side.

"Gordon Taylor of the PFA is telling them not to accept pay cuts. Her needs to change his position."

He added: "It's the likes of Burnley who could face financial crisis. Don't be fooled about so called rich clubs, they are not as rich as you think.

"I imagine Man City have a monthly payroll £20m for players+staff. Shut them down for 3 months with no income they cant carry on."

On the players, he continued: "Sorry but Premier League footballers are not out of work, they have contracts.

"Clubs can't claim furlough for them quite rightly so. It's the non-playing staff who have no work or contracts."

When asked what he would do if he was still chairman, Lord Sugar said: "I would stand up against Gordon Taylor and tell him to shut it.

"Then ask the players to take a cut for a while to help pay the hard working people of the non playing staff at the clubs."

He added: "Yes of course the players can survive a few months without pay. But Gordon Taylor of the PFA is advising them not to accept any cuts. The clubs are contractually bound to pay the players.

"You are right , why have that payroll. It's survival of being the in the Premier League. The agents force the wages up and if a club wants to survive in the Premier League they pay. It's a vicious circle don't pay you drop out and lose mega revenue and you cant afford the players you have."

Lord Sugar also agreed with a couple of tweets stating that ENIC owner Joe Lewis cannot pump money into the club due to financial fair play regulations before standing up for his own tenure as chairman.

One Twitter user said: "Lord Sugar let me say this as I’ve fought for my country. You were chairman Tottenham Hotspur’s FC but knew nothing about football but thought you did. Am I right? Yes."

Lord Sugar replied: "We all thank you for your service to the country. Yes I rescued Spurs from bankruptcy out of sentiment for the team I had supported for years. With no thanks from some supporters (not all). What has this go to do with anything?"
