EXCLUSIVE: Ghana contacted Valencia star Yunus Musah before choosing United States over African nation

Ghana contacted Valencia winger Yunus Musah over nationality switch before he chose to represent the United States of America ahead of his first official competitive appearance for the side, GHANAsoccernet.com can exclusively report.

The 18-year-old  committed his international allegiance to the United States after snubbing overtures from Ghana.

The talented wideman is expected to make his first official bow for the United States ahead of the Nations League semi-finals against Honduras.

And the winger, who could have also represented England and Italy, has confirmed contacts with the Ghana federation.

“ Italy hadn't come close before, but Ghana has. They called my parents before. Italy had not communicated. I think it was when the season started people began to see me in and around the first team at that stage," he said

He says he's looking forward to his first game for the Americans.

“I'm going to enjoy it a lot. It is an experience of a lifetime. I haven't been back to New York since I was born, so I'll stay there, then see where I was born and get to know the area . I can't wait to play in front of the fans. This season too, playing my debut season without fans was a bit annoying.

Musah, born in New York, dazzled in his first season for Valencia, notching a total of 35 matches in the La Liga and Copa del Rey.

He has also made five appearances for the United States in friendly matches.

Musah spent his early childhood in the Italian city of Castelfranco Veneto but moved to London with his family when he was 9. Musah was part of Arsenal's academy, and he went on to represent -- and captain -- England at various levels, most recently the under-18s in 2019. He was also called up to represent their U19 team in October 2020.
