Exclusive Interview: Stephen Appiah talks about Cesena progress

Published on: 08 November 2010

Serie A newcomers Cesena had a good start on their return to the top flight and at one point were joint top of the League but in the last two months they have struggled to finish off teams or close down games.

They have conceded a lot of goals in the second half of their games and most of the goals have been in the last 5 - 10 minutes of games dropping valuable points

The StepApp team caught up with Stephen Appiah who has been ever present in midfield for Cesena to find out the mood in the camp and what he is hoping for in future games:

Q: How are you feeling physically and mentally?

A: I am very well and feeling good. I am back to my former self and enjoying my game so I cant really ask for more at the moment. Its all good without a doubt

Q: You may be well but Cesena's early form seems to have gone down a bit and you are not winning as you used to?

A: Our form hasnt really gone down but I agree we are struggling to win games these days. We started off very well and I guess expectations were raised then. People shouldn't forget Cesena is a small team compared to the more established big teams so we really punched above our weight at the start.

Q: Can explain that answer a bit more?

A: What I mean is that we came into this league knowing we were here to fight for survival and not to win the Scudetto. We have the quality to stay up and I am sure we will if we keep working hard. At the same time we are aware that a few more losses and we will be struggling to survive so we are working to get more wins

Q: How is the mood in the Camp

A: The mood is very good and upbeat. We are one big family and are supporting eachother because we know there is a big fight ahead in Serie A. From the owners right through to the coaching and playing staff, and to the fans - we all have one vision which is to make Cesena a permanent Seria A club. The only way to do that is to stick together as one and I have no doubt we will achieve our aims

Q:You won man of the match award against recently even though you were on the losing side. How did you manage that?

A: Well it was a team effort so I dont think I deserve it alone. We were unlucky against Sampdoria as we got done in the last minutes of the game. We should have at least got a draw out of that game. we played well as a team and to be fair we have been playing well but we need to see out games to the end. We are working on playing to the last whistle and with some luck we will start getting the right results

Q: You have played in different positions for Cesena now. What is you best position in the team?

A: I can play anywhere I am asked to play - apart from in goal. Its down to the coach and he knows football very well so wherever he requires me to play I will play. Its all about making the first 11 for me, so wherever I am asked to play I will

Q: Finally do you have any messages for the Cesena Fans?

A:They have been brilliant so far and all I can say is that they should carry on supporting the team through this lean spell because we will come good eventually. I am pretty confident that we have a good squad and good manager and we are all desperate to do well for Cesena Football Club
