Experiencing the World Alone: How to Enjoy Solo Travel

Traveling by yourself can be one of the best experiences in your life. Learn more here.

Getting out of your comfort zone can be one of the riskiest yet most fulfilling things that you can do in your entire life. On the one hand, a lot of people prefer to play it safe and avoid mistakes and regrets later on. However, some people are willing to take risks and end up making the best decision of their lives.

The same applies to visiting a place you have never been to before. Whether it's planning a Zion Park tour or visiting another country, traveling can change your perception of the world around you. Every travel, whether locally or internationally, can be an adventure that you won't forget.

Solo traveling: Pros and Cons

Traveling can be a liberating experience. It will open your eyes to a new world that is way different from the usual things you see, hear, taste, and feel. However, it can be a nerve-racking experience to travel alone in a place you are not entirely familiar with. Then again, traveling solo can be one of the best things that you can do while you still are young.

Pros

Solo traveling can be a perfect hobby or pastime for introverts who like to experience adventures from time to time. Traveling with friends and family can be as enjoyable, too. But sometimes, it can be restricting to travel with other people because you have to consider their time as well.

Being a solo traveler gives you all the time to explore new cultures and places as much and as often as you want. You can schedule your travels in your most convenient time, unlike when you have travel buddies. If you are already tired, you can go back to your hotel and relax anytime you want.

Cons

On the contrary, it can be a little risky to travel alone. If you are not careful enough, you might be an easy target for thieves and scammers roaming around the area. You might be conned to shell out a ridiculous amount of money for transportation and other goods.

If you are not used to having company, solo traveling might not be for you. It can get lonely and dreary out there, especially if you are in an unfamiliar place without an excellent companion to talk to. If you have not done prior research about the place you are about to go to, then you might end up getting lost and confused.

How to prepare for a solo trip

If you want to try solo travel, here are some ways to make the most out of this new experience:

  • Take time to research the place or country you are planning to go to. Learn about their culture and even some basic phrases you can use to communicate with the locals.
  • Save up for your travel. Pack up light as much as possible. Do not bring too much money, especially when going outside.
  • Book your hotel ahead instead of looking for one once you are already there. Carry an ID with you when going out. Take photos, mingle with the locals, try the local cuisine, and enjoy the entire experience.
