Kotoko facing relegation

FIFA has ruled that giants Asante Kotoko must be relegated from the Ghanaian top-flight next month if they fail to pay the full $180,000 to Tunisian giants Esperance.

The Kumasi-based club must now clear the debt with just 18 days remaining or be thrown out of the top tier and will still be be made to pay the fine.

The Porcupine Warriors giants were ordered to pay Esperance by 6 April or the Ghana FA will be ordered by FIFA to relegate the two-time African champions to the Division One League.

FIFA has told the Ghana FA of the impending disciplinary measure and the the two-time African champions have also received the letter from football's world governing body.

The Tunisian giants have already taken stringent measures to get the money owed them by the Ghanaian side by freezing $150,000 for the transfer of Kwame Bonsu.

This means which means Kotoko must pay just $30,000 over the transfer of the controversial former Berekum Chelsea striker Emmanuel Clottey, who hardly even played for the Porcupine Warriors.

"Kotoko have received a letter from FIFA which orders them to pay us $180,000 for the wrongful signing of Emmanuel Clottey," Esperance vice President Walid Arem told Nhyira FM.

"We don't owe them but rather they owe us $30,000 and they have to settle us before the date stated in the letter from FIFA"

"We bought Kwame Bonsu for $150,000 and they also owe us $180,000. We need the money badly, so we're waiting for it.''

Kotoko started their own problems when they reported Esperance to FIFA saying the Tunisians have not paid the transfer fee of their former midfielder Kwame Bonsu.

The North African responded by reminding Kotoko that the transfer fee for Clottey was still unpaid, infuriating the Ghanaian side to report the matter to FIFA.

The Clottey transfer was conducted under the previous management regime and the paperwork for the transfer cannot be located by the current management team five years after the played signed for the Kumasi-based club.

FIFA ruled that Clottey signed for Kotoko while he was still under contract with Esperance which led to the $180,000 transfer amount sanction by FIFA.
