FIFA Relief Fund: Controversy looms as Ghana FA itemizes US$7K for Media Capacity Building

Published on: 15 July 2020

The Ghana Football Association is turning heads after budgeting US$ 7,000 to build capacity of the media in the West African country.

The Executive Council announced on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 that it will disburse a combined $1.8 million from FIFA and CAF to clubs in the country.

But the decision to splurge US$ 7,000 on the media has raised eyebrows.

The controversy with that decision is that the media is not a constituent member of the Ghana FA.

What is remarkably striking is that the media is raking in more than constituent body the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) which will take home $2,000.

It's unclear which organized media outfit will benefit from the booty amid widespread suspicion the move is aimed at building the capacity of members of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG).

Given that its unclear how the process will be managed or accounted for, it has sparked a wave of criticism following the announcement by the Ghana FA on Wednesday.

As exclusively reported by Ghana's leading football website, GHANAsoccernet.com on Tuesday, each Premier League club will pocket $15,000, totaling $27000 to all the 18 clubs in the country's topflight in a bid to ease the financial burden amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The 48 National Division One League Clubs will take home $7,500 each while each of the 16 Women's Premier League clubs will take home $10,000 as part of their share of the relief fund.

The 72 women's Division One Regional teams will share  $60,000 among themselves to ease the financial pressure on the teams.

This will be seen as huge relief for the clubs following the unexpected financial difficulties faced due to the impact of COVID-19.

The 2019/20 season had to be ended following the increasing cases of coronavirus in the West African nation.

This has forced clubs to release players from camp with some teams owing salaries of players for more than two months.

The future of the Ghana Premier League is yet to be decided, with a date for congress to be decided for decision making.
