Five in the Glo Premier League relegation basket, three to go

Published on: 19 May 2012

Five Premier League clubs (Hearts of Lions, Berekum Arsenals, Mighty Jets, Bechem United and Wassaman United) are all dancing in the relegation basket and three will surely re-visit the division one as the Ghana Glo Premiership enters it penultimate matches this weekend with some interesting pairings.

At the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium, soccer miners, Ashantigold will play as host to city rivals Asante Kotoko.

The Porcupine Warriors have already won the league and thus goes into this match with cool heads but Ashantigold shares the second spot with four other clubs and needs to win at all cost if they indeed want to finish at the second spot.

The run away winners have accumulated 60 points and have been at the summit throughout the second round. On the other hand, Ashantigold have 43 points and are on seventh position.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko has not been answerable to any prediction table this season and if Maxwell Konadu should descend to Obuasi with his midfield quartet of Michael Anaba, Daniel Nii Adjei, Fatau Mohammed and Michael Akuffo then Yaw Acheampong and his team will bite the fabu bullet but if Kotoko should decide to play for a pride then Ashantigold will jump the fabulous gun.

Second placed Aduana Stars will travel to the Tarkwa T&A Park to face Coach Bashir Hayford’s Medeama sporting club.

Medeama is on the same pegging with Aduana as both clubs have 43 points appease but Aduana leads the latter on a superior goal aggregate.

Both teams have been very impressive this particular season especially Medeama who nearly missed the boat in the first round but have come back strongly in the second round to reclaim the position due them.

Medeama can boast of one of the best midfielder’s in the Glo Premiership as their key man in the middle Richard Mpong is gradually picking a position in the senior national soccer team.

In attack, Bashir Hayford can always rely on Luis Agyeman and Hans Kwofie for results.

Aduana on the other hand, has been relying on the prowess of their right fullback Godfred Saka and if Medeama do not stop him from his numerous runs down the flanks then they will have themselves to blame.

At the Cark Reindorf Park in Dansoman, the scientific soccer lads Liberty Professionals will host African Champions League campaigners Berekum Chelsea.

Liberty is eighth on the log with 40 points whiles Chelsea is fourth with 43 points.

On the local scene Berekum Chelsea has failed to live up to expectation as they have in their camp the best talents that could easily win the league any day but it seems they’ve reserved some of their energy for their continental assignment.

However, if Emmanuel Clottey who leads the goal king chart in this years champions league with six goals and captain Abdul Basit could be given a free role from the bench then Liberty will have a bitter pill to swallow but on the contrary if Coach Sarpong could deploy a system which will allow Latif Salifu to play as a shadow striker then Chelsea will be on the hot seat.

Kpando Hearts of Lions will welcome New Edubiase united to the Kpando Park. Hearts of Lions is twelfth on the table with 30 points whiles Edubiase is sixth with 43 points.

Hearts of Lions have looked a pale shadow of themselves throughout the whole season and for the first time since they joined the elite division the club is battling with relegation.

New Edubiase have nothing to play for in this encounter except that they will be looking forward to seeing their leading marksman Emmanuel Baffour to score a goal or two to break Ishmael Addo’s long standing record.

The pride of the Volta needs to treat this match with all the seriousness that it deserve as even a split of point in this encounter could cost their stay in the premiership and with this in mind the Bank roller of the club Victor Ahiakpor needs to visit the bank before the weekend to boost his players lost morale.

Bottomed club Mighty Jets will play as host to Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium in a win or die affair.

Hearts is fifth on the ladder with 43 points whiles Mighty Jets on the other hand is last with 26 points.

Coach C.K Akunnor and his team would like to appease their supporters with a win after going down by 1 – 2 to Chelsea over the week but Mighty Jets who needs six points to survive in the league will be seeking to wrestle all the three points from the Phobians.

At the Tema Community 3 Park, Tema Youth will play as host to All Stars. Tema Youth is eleventh with 32 points whiles All Stars is ninth on the table with 39 points.

Both clubs are technically gifted and will give the spectators value for money but for my money, I will go for the home side.

Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs will travel to the Brong Ahafo region to play as guest to Bechem United.

Bechem is seriously battling with relegation as they are fifteenth on the ladder with 26 points as against Dwarfs who are tenth with 36 points.

Bechem have to win this battle to see if they could remain in the league.

The real battle will be at the Berekum Golden City Park where Arsenals will play as host to Wassaman united.

Arsenals are thirteenth on the log with 27 points whiles Wassaman united is fourteenth with 26 points. Arsenal needs only a win to safe them from relegation regardless of what happens to them in their last match.

However, Wassaman united can escape the relegation boat if they can pull a draw in this encounter and wins their last match at home next weekend.
