Fonseca explains Roma defensive struggles

Paulo Fonseca wants to see a 'motivated' Roma in the derby tomorrow and insists injuries have affected their season.

The Giallorossi face Lazio in the Rome derby and need to defend their seventh place.

"We've prepared the game differently from the first leg. We were not balanced enough in that game and we don't want Lazio to generate counterattacks," Fonseca said at a press conference.

"It was a tough season for us, with injuries to many important players. If we always had them available, it would have been different for us."

With José Mourinho coming in to replace him, does he have any regret about his two-year spell in Rome?

"I am proud of my two seasons at Roma, I've always been respected by everyone, including the fans and those who work here," the coach claimed.

"I am the main responsible for the results, I try to give solutions and when we make mistakes, I always try to solve them."

Roma have conceded 56 goals this season and over 100 during his tenure, what was the problem?

"It was not only down to the defence, it was a problem of the whole team. It affected us not to have Chris Smalling available for the entire season.

"We played with many young players and we made many mistakes that cost us several goals."

Fonseca announced he will switch to a four-man defence tomorrow.

"I've always said we can use two different systems. The choice depends on the team and the moment," the coach added.

"The lads are motivated, I have the same motivations as in the first derby. There will be no fans at the stadium tomorrow, but I still want to see determination, I expect a motivated team."
