FONSECA PREVIEWS 'DIFFICULT' VERONA TEST

Published on: 15 July 2020

Coach Paulo Fonseca has warned of the threat Hellas Verona will pose when they come to the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday evening. The Giallorossi go up against one of the surprise packages of the season when Ivan Juric's side come to the Italian capital, with kick-off set for 21:45 local time. With no pre-match press conference for the midweek game, Fonseca spoke to asroma.com about the contest he is expecting when the Gialloblu take to the pitch. Here's what the boss had to say...

Verona come to the Olimpico tomorrow: what about Ivan Juric’s squad are you focusing on going into the game?
“It will be a different game to some of the others, we’ll be going up against a side with a different style of play. They are very good under pressure, they don’t stop playing the ball around and they make it difficult for you with their build-up play. We need to be organised and focused, because it’s tough to go up against them.”

How are the guys after winning two in a row?
“They are doing well. It’s easier to get back to work after a few wins, but above and beyond that we have to show that we have the desire and hunger to keep this run going – especially in a tough game like this one will be. I always say that when you can’t change the past when you lose but after wins the same principle applies: we have to keep looking ahead.”

The three-man defence seems to have given you more stability, will you continue with it tomorrow as well?
“Yes, I’ve liked how it has looked the last two games and we need to keep playing like that.”

Can you confirm you still don’t want to make many changes to the starting XI, even given there is a big game against Inter waiting on Sunday?
“Yes, I don’t think I’ll be changing much.”

Nicolo Zaniolo scored against Brescia – how is he now and how many minutes is he capable of playing?
“Zaniolo played well and is well, but as I have always said it is the team that is the most important thing. The guys won, and they won well. Nicolo will gradually return to being a key player for us, but right now the team is the most important thing.”

After the game against Brescia you explained your decision to pick Antonio Mirante over Pau Lopez, but who will play tomorrow?
“Tomorrow Pau will be back in goal.”
