Former Ghana captain Charles Akonnor has landed a new job following his dismissal as Black Stars head coach in September last year.

Akonnor has been named coach of South African club AmaZulu FC on a three-year contract, Ghanaosccernet.com can report.

Ghana Football Association fired Akonnor after two matches in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.

His contract was cancelled following the Black Stars' 1-0 loss to South Africa in Johannesburg.

However, AmaZulu, who are now ninth in Premier League Soccer, feel Akonnor can lead them to a strong finish and have appointed him.

After parting ways with head coach Bennie Mcarthy, AmaZulu chose Akonnor.

Akonnor will be hoping to change the club's fortunes.

Akonnor is expected to travel to South Africa in the coming days to commence work.

Before the top Black Stars job, Akonnor managed Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak – undoubtedly the two biggest clubs in Ghana. He also coached AshantiGold who pride themselves as the third biggest after Kotoko and Hearts.

Akonnor won NC Special Competition with Asante Kotoko in 2019.

As Black Stars coach, Akonnor qualified the team for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Akonnor, a former footballer, made 51 appearances for Black Stars and scored 13 goals. He played for seven clubs including German side Wolfsburg.
