Furious Ibrahimovic: What's going on with Zlatan?

Published on: 28 January 2021

AC Milan are top of the Serie A table and enjoying their best season in a decade, but you wouldn't know it from observing Zlatan Ibrahimovic's on-field behaviour.

The Swede has always been a big personality, but he looks angrier and more tense than ever on the pitch.

In each of his last three appearances, the veteran has had harsh words for his opponents.

His war with Romelu Lukaku

A Milan derby in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals was always going to be tense, but nobody could believe the scenes that unfolded between Ibrahimovic and Lukaku.

Ibrahimovic infuriated the Belgian to an extent never seen before, telling him to "go do your voodoo s**t," and also mentioning Lukaku's mother.

Lukaku raged, offered the Swede out and didn't bite his tongue in his responses either.

In the end, the Inter forward had the last laugh, scoring a penalty as his side won while Ibrahimovic got a second yellow card and was sent off.

His words to Duvan Zapata

In the previous match, Atalanta's Duvan Zapata was the subject of Ibrahimovic's attention.

With VAR reviewing a possible penalty in favour of AC Milan, the Colombian had something to say.

"You can't finish a match without a penalty, do you want your 13th?" Duvan asked.

Ibrahimovic, not one to miss an opportunity to wind up an opponent, replied by saying "I've scored more goals than you've played games in your entire career".

Again, though, it was the Nerazzurri forward who came out on top, scoring Atalanta's third in a 3-0 win.

Targeting Diego Godin

Prior to Atalanta, AC Milan faced Cagliari in Sardinia.

Ibrahimovic scored twice in a win, but again there was tension between him and Godin.

The two went head to head, and Ibrahimovic had some things to say to the Uruguayan.

The damage done to Nedum Onuoha

Even in MLS, Ibrahimovic was provoking opponents. In a game against Real Salt Lake with the Los Angeles Galaxy, the Swede had words for Onuoha.

"During the match he threatened me," Onuoha said later.

"He said that he was going to hurt me. He came to apologise after, but this is the guy who is the face of MLS. It's unacceptable."

Grabbing Simon Kjaer by the throat

Although Kjaer is now a teammate of Ibrahimovic's at AC Milan, they locked horns at previous clubs.

Ibrahimovic was at Manchester United and Kjaer played for Fenerbahce in a game the Turkish side won 2-1. The forward got angry and grabbed the defender by the neck, but he didn't flinch.

"I wasn't surprised by what he did," Kjaer said.

"Football's a game and I don't take what he did too seriously. I didn't hear what he said, but I know he wasn't happy.

"He's a player who puffs out his chest, he's very arrogant on the pitch. I know how he reacts."
