Gabriel Slonina attracting interest from Serie A, Bundesliga & La Liga

Published on: 13 January 2022

Chicago Fire goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina is the subject of serious interest from Europe, sources have told 90min.

The 17-year-old enjoyed a remarkable rise at the end of the 2021 MLS season, starting the Fire's final 11 games ahead of established No.1 Bobby Shuttleworth.

During that time, Slonina kept four clean sheets and averaged 3.91 saves per 90 minutes, some of which were truly outstanding. Despite his tender age, Slonina appears mature beyond his years, especially given how he's handled the pressures of his position.

Slonina has since been rewarded with a couple of call-ups to the United States Men's National Team. Though he's yet to play for Gregg Berhalter's side and remains eligible for Poland, he does have nine caps to his name across various youth levels.

His excellent performances in MLS haven't gone unnoticed across the Atlantic either. Sources have revealed to 90min that clubs from Serie A and the German Bundesliga are preparing bids for Slonina, while La Liga champions Atletico Madrid have already met with the player's representatives.

At this point, it remains unclear whether or not Slonina intends to leave Chicago this winter or line up a move later down the line after gaining further experience in MLS.

Regardless, Slonina is the latest in a long line of budding talents in MLS to draw the attention of clubs in Europe, with Ricardo Pepi leaving FC Dallas for Augsburg and Daryl Dike swapping Orlando City for West Brom this January alone.

While Slonina has been involved in a training camp with the USMNT, the Fire have begun preparations for the 2022 MLS campaign, which they begin away to Inter Miami on February 26.
