GATTUSO: "I SAW GRIT AND PASSION"

Published on: 17 February 2020

After a well-earned win for his team on Sunday at Cagliari, Gennaro Gattuso called on his players to build some consistency moving forward.

“I saw grit and passion, but we need to keep going like this,” he said. I’m pleased with the team’s attitude – we gave everything out there, showing desire and dedication. That said, I need to see lots of displays like this."

“In the last two matches we kept clean sheets, which shows an improvement, tactically speaking. However, I’ll say it again, there’s still a long way for us to go."

“I said that, from the end of the transfer window, I wanted to see the boys showing total sacrifice for this jersey. That goes for everyone, and then I’ll be the first person to help every single player when I see maximum effort.”

Commenting on Dries Merten’s winning goal, Gattuso added: “Dries is a phenomenon. I said this last week, not only for his quality in front of goal but for his ability to link up play. He's a great player, who makes difficult things seem simple."

“This is a team with great potential – we're aware of that, but you have to prove it on the pitch. Today we've done everything well, but our first goal is to reach 40 points."

“Let's stay focused and keep the reality of our league position very clear in our minds. We have a lot quality and talented players, but to achieve the results we want, we have to think and express ourselves as a team.”
