Genoa coach bemoans lack of quality against Chievo

Published on: 28 February 2016

Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini was disappointed with his team’s performance in their 1-0 defeat away to Chievo.

The main aspect that the Grifone tactician elaborated on was the inability to capitalise on the space that his team had to control the play and he also pointed out that a lack of fluidity hindered his team’s chances of securing at least a point.

“In the first half, we had a lot of space to play in but we really did not make the most of it,” Gasperini told Mediaset Premium Sport after the match.

“In risking very little, we did not have the skill to go ahead and score. The Chievo goal changed the game because we were a bit disunited and were not able to grab a draw.”

The Rossoblu are equal 15th with city rivals Sampdoria on the Serie A table with 28 points after 27 rounds and they are five points away from relegation. Despite finishing sixth last season, Gasperini admitted that surviving relegation has been the main focus for his team under his coaching reign.

“We know very well that this was our type of season,” Gasperini added. “We have always fought to stay up except for some seasons. Perhaps the anomaly was last year.

“There are games like last Sunday’s win against Udinese when things go well and others like today when things go wrong.”
