Gerard Pique laments Barcelona's missed chances in showdown with leaders Atletico Madrid

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique was annoyed that his side could not finish off LaLiga leaders Atletico Madrid in Saturday's top-of-the-table clash which ended 0-0 and handed the advantage in the title race to Real Madrid.

Atletico would have gone five points clear of Barcelona at the top with victory and they made the better start in search of a first win at the Nou Camp since 2006.

Diego Simeone's side showed more intent in the first half although Lionel Messi came closest to scoring late in the first half when he danced through Atletico's defence but was denied by a finger-tip save from Jan Oblak.

Barca had the better of the second half and Ousmane Dembele should have won it when he had a free header from close range but sent the ball well over the bar.

'We knew the opponent we were facing today, they’re very solid defensively, possibly the best defence in the league and it's not easy. So when you have chances you have to take them,' Pique said.

'We had a few clear chances and should have at least scored one.

'We had clearer chances than them but it wasn’t meant to be. We know the situation were in and we no longer depend on ourselves. But we're still alive.'

Champions Real Madrid would have been watching the game with keen interest and the draw means they will retain the title if they win their four remaining matches.

Zinedine Zidane's side will not have it easy though. On Sunday they face Sevilla, who are in fourth place and not yet out of the title race.

Real then have two consecutive away games, at Granada and Athletic Bilbao, before ending the season at home to Villarreal, who will have one eye on the Europa League final against Manchester United the following Wednesday.

Pique said he expected more twists and turns in what has been an epic title race.

'Based on what has happened this season, anything can happen,' he added.

'It's still wide open for everyone. Of course if Real Madrid win their last four games they will become champions but you have to be consistent and it's not easy to win four matches in a row.'

Barca visit Levante next, then hosting Celta Vigo before visiting struggling Eibar on the final day of the season.

'I think if we win all three we’ll have a chance,' he added.

'I don’t have a crystal ball but that has to be our objective as a club well fight until the end we have competed until the end nearly every season.'

Atletico keeper Oblak was pleased with the ambition his side showed and urged his team mates to keep their heads cool in the final stretch as they aim to win a first title since 2014.

'We proved we came here to win the game and we played better than them in the in first half. It's one point more on the board but we have to keep on fighting,' he said.

'If you are strong mentally that will help your legs stay fresh.'
