GFA approves Enhanced Matchday safety protocols to bolster stadium security

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially approved the Enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols 2025, a far-reaching framework designed to improve stadium safety and protect all stakeholders involved in Ghanaian football.

This initiative comes in response to the tragic death of Kotoko fan Nana Pooley, who was stabbed during a league match against Nsoatreman earlier this month.

Following consultations with clubs, security agencies, and government officials, the GFA has enacted strict new measures to prevent similar incidents.

The GFA believes football must be a safe and enjoyable experience for all fans and it cannot afford to lose lives because of hooliganism.

These protocols, designed in collaboration with all 18 Premier League clubs and security agencies, will ensure that safety becomes a top priority at every match venue.

Under the new framework, each club must appoint a Club Safety and Security Officer (CSSO), and the Ghana Police Service will establish a dedicated Sports Police Unit to oversee football-related security matters.

Additionally, new stadium zoning rules have been introduced to control access to sensitive areas, while matchday security coordinators will be tasked with enforcing order both inside and outside venues.

The GFA emphasised that strict penalties await clubs that fail to comply, including fines ranging from GH₵20,000 to GH₵100,000 and venue bans for repeat offenders.
