Ghana assistant coach Akwasi Appiah claims the recent call-up of Asante Kotoko striker Nathaniel Asamoah is a move to motivate in-form home-based strikers.

The 20-year-old, who leads the Ghana Premier League with 9 goals from 21 games is set to make his debut against Congo in a Nations Cup qualifier on 27 March and England two days later in a friendly.

However, his inclusion in Goran Stevanovic's 24-man squad for the double header has been debated in the local media after failing to score in four league matches.

But Appiah has justified the decision to select the untested former Ghana youth international.

"There are very few strikers on the local front now and Nathaniel Asamoah is also doing well. He has scored nine goals so far in the league. This call-up is suppose to motivate him and other strikers in the league as well," the soft-spoken ex-Ghana captain disclosed on Viasat 1.

Nathaniel Asamoah is one of two locally-based players picked for this month's assignments.
