Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah's career hangs in the balance

Uncertainty surrounds the future of Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah after a top official in Ghana football warned his agent against breaking his contract with Udinese.

The centre-back could be banned by Fifa if he is found guilty of violating his contract with the Italian side by signing for Evian.

The Italian side are to ask Fifa to ban his agent Antoine Figali and punish the Ghanaian for violating his contract to sign for Evian.

The central defender signed a four-year contract last week with Evian on a free transfer but his Italian club say they did not approve the move.

His agent Antoine Figali has been accused by Udinese for encouraging the player to violate his contract.

Udinese signed the player from South African side Free State for One million Euros last year and they claim he signed a five-year contract.

Figali told Mensah that he does not have a contract with Udinese which resulted in the decision to sign for Evian without Udinese’s approval.

Mensah told GHANAsoccernet.com that he trusts what Figali said about his contract with Udinese.

But it has now emerged that a key figure in Ghana football had warned Figali against breaking the contract with Udinese.

"I warned them against this deal because I knew it was going to bring trouble," the Ghana FA official said on condition of anonymity.

"It is unthinkable that a big club like Udinese would sign a young player for 1million Euros for just one season.

"It would have been unwise for them to send him on loan for one season and then lose him after that.

"These players must learn that some of these agents are only interested in what they get and their interest instead of the interest of these players.

"At the end of the day, Mensah should know the terms of his contract with Udinese but not just what his agent says.

"If a ban comes it is only on him the player and his career and reputation will be severely affected."

Mensah, who spent last season on loan at promoted Spanish side Granada FC, inked a four-year deal with Evian last Thursday.

He was officially presented to the fans on Saturday just before their pre-season 2-0 defeat to Nantes.
