Ghana FA boss Kwasi Nyantakyi says the never forgotten infamous May 9 disaster should be a reminder of the essence of life and ways of preventing its loss.

Ghana football was struck by a massive tragedy on May9, 2001 when 127 lives perished at a Premier League game between giants Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Eleven years on, many believe lessons from the biggest tragedy in Ghanaian history remains unlearnt of which Nyantakyi hopes the anniversary be used to drum home the effects of crowd violence in football matches.

"Today is a big day for all of us. We remind ourselves of the big disaster that occurred on May 9, 2001," he told Kumasi-based Fox FM.

"We aim to prevent such an unfortunate event from ever recurring, not even a single soul should perish because of football.

"Football is played according to the laws of the game and I pray supporters go to matches and comport themselves according to these dictates.

"You are at liberty to support your team the best way you can but you should be guided off any act which has the potential of causing hooliganism."

The GFA boss adds preventive measures have since been taken by authorities to ensure such a tragedy does not occur again.

"Match venues are nowadays not filled to the brim like it used to. If for instance a stadium has teh capacity of 40,000, only about 38,000 people are allowed in.

"So we plead with the fans to bear with us and understand such measures for it is for their own good."
