Ghana FA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has explained that former Black Stars coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor was owed seven months before he was sacked.

Coach Akonnor was sacked following Ghana's poor showing in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and South Africa.

The Black Stars won one game out of the two matches and currently sits second in the group with three points.

Henry Asante Twum said before the sacking of CK Akonnor the Ghana FA engaged the Sports Ministry on how to settle the debts of the former Wolfsburg captain.

Akonnor who was paid $25,000 was owed in salary arrears of seven months which was confirmed by the Ghana FA Spokesperson.

"We've met him and discussed with him. The Ministry will come back to us with the payment plan. Once that is made to the FA, we will give it to him," he said on Sunday

Akonnor's Black Stars played 10 games won four, lost four, and drew two with the performance against Ethiopia and South Africa, earning the team criticism from some Ghanaians.

He has been replaced by Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac who was unveiled to the public on Friday.

Rajevac has signed a performance-based contract for a year and has been tasked to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

He will be rewarded with a package of $600,000 should he qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and win next year's AFCON.
