Ghana FA confirms Essien's return to Black Stars in March

The Ghana Football Association has confirmed news that Michael Essien will return to the Black Stars in March next year.

Ghanasoccernet broke the news last week that Essien will be available for the country in the African Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo in Brazzaville.

The Chelsea midfielder was excused from national team duties to enable him to settle well at his club and recover fully from a career-threatening knee injury.

Essien temporary international retirement sparked the suspicion that he was on the verge of quitting the Black Stars.

But Ghana FA chief Kwasi Nyantakyi says Essien will be available for the Black Stars for the Nations Cup qualifier against Congo.

"Essien never said he will not play for Ghana again," Nyantakyi said.

"He merely asked for time away from the team but has now told us he will be available for selection in March."

Essien's last appearance for the Black Stars came in the group stages of the 2010 Nations Cup when he played for forty five minutes against Ivory Coast.

He spent more than six months on the sidelines while the Black Stars reached the final of the Nations Cup and the quarter-finals of the World Cup in the process but has been in fantastic form since his return to fitness.
