Ghana FA nears agreement with Glo over fresh Premier League sponsorship deal
Glo set to secure fresh deal to sponsor Ghana Premier League

The Ghana FA are in discussions to sign a new contract with Globacom to again become headline sponsors of the Premier League.

The Nigerian-owned telecommunications firm’s initial five-year agreement to sponsor the Ghanaian top flight has expired.

Glo’s sponsorship of the Premier League has been saddled with challenges of prompt payments of sponsorship monies to the clubs.

They are currently reported to owe about $2.2m in arrears payments – a situation that has taken a massive hit at the scarce resources of Premier League clubs.

But the Ghana FA in the absence of any viable alternative have decided to open talks towards signing a new sponsorship agreement with Glo despite their unreliability with payments.

Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi has already held meetings with top Globacom officials and now appears to be reaching for another agreement between the two parties.

“Yes I went to Nigeria and we spoke to the Glo officials, we are expecting a new deal to be signed by close of next month,” The GFA boss sais on Tuesday.

“We are still talking and I know we will come to an amicable agreement with Globacom.”

Where is MTN? They make the loudest noise, when it matters most you won't see them, in terms of popularity and gaining grounds, Glo does not fall even among the top 4 in this nation, yet they carry this huge task, where is MTN, Tigo, vodafon and the rest?

Ask again ooo. They prefer to use their money to sponsor entertainment programs and beauty pageants. They usually want programs that brings them in direct contact with ladies and music stars. They prefer wild parties. Yet, they are the ones with the most terrible network and high tariffs. Their per second billing is quack and come up with shambolic promotions. Lets bring in some ladies and stars and MTN will jump on.

First of all, GFA hasn't done much to market the league. We all know that. But there's a bigger problem - there are no big Ghanaian companies. Why should a Nigerian company be the one to sponsor the Ghanaian league. Most big leagues all over the world are sponsored by home-grown companies. Even the South African PSL is sponsored by ABSA(I don't even want to talk about GH banks which are so tiny). Anyways, the PLB should negotiate broadcast rights which should be the main source of revenue. Supersport just signed a $34million deal for the Nigerian league. But how can the PLB be efficient when it's just a board. A company should be created to run the league. All these are short term fixes anyway. The real solution is to grow Ghanaian international companies which can sponsor events and educational research. It's not only sports that is suffering, showbiz(musicians are always complaining) and education are probably even suffering much more.
