Ghana improves Fifa ranking in new year

Ghana starts 2012 as the 26th best team in the world according to the latest Fifa rankings released on Wednesday.

The first ranking of the year sees the Black Stars improve by three places from its previous 29th position achieved last year.

The Black Stars, who aims to win the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations however start off the year as Africa's second best side behind Cote d'Ivoire after gaining 18 points to accumulate 779.

Algeria are third with Egypt following up in fourth on the continental ranking table.

World champions, Spain still leads the the overall standing followed by the Netherlands and Germany in third position.

Ghana however stands a chance of improving its position as matches being played at the Nations Cup in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea will be taken into account in its next release expected mid-February.
