Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey sees red on Arsenal return from Afcon

Thomas Partey was sent off in his first match for Arsenal after his disappointing showing in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations as Ghana failed to progress to the knockout stage.

Two days after Ghana’s exit, Partey was in action for the Gunners in the Carabao Cup defeat against Liverpool on Thursday night.

It was a disastrous return for the midfielder as he saw a red card for two yellow cards in the space of three minutes in the semi-final clash at the Emirates.

He was first booked in the 87th minute and received a second yellow card for a senseless late challenge on Fabinho in the 90th minute.

His inclusion in the Arsenal squad for the match came as a huge surprise to Ghanaians who are struggling to get over the Black Stars horror show in Cameroon.

Liverpool advance to the final, where they will face Chelsea, with a 2-0 aggregate victory after the first leg ended 0-0 at Anfield.

At the time,  Partey was with the Black Stars focused on the Nations Cup. However, Partey had a shocking tournament.

He failed to live up to big expectations, producing average performances in all three group games as Ghana crashed out in an embarrassing fashion.

Partey took over as captain in the last game against Comoros after Andre Ayew's harsh red card, but he could not inspire the boys as the Black Stars were beaten 3-2 by the debutants in Garoua.
