Ghana named among World Top 20

Fifa has named Ghana among the 20 most powerful football nations in the world, following the release of its latest ranking.

The latest ranking released on Wednesday by the world governing puts the Black Stars at the 20th position.

This means the West Africans moved three rungs up from last month's 23 position of the ranking released every month.

The 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists reaped 15 points to send their build up to 889.

Ghana are still Africa's second best side behind Egypt. The sides played in the final of the African Cup of Nations in January with the north Africans winning 1-0.

The Black Stars were boosted by their recent 3-0 win over Swaziland in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers while other giants like Egypt, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia struggled.

Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Algeria and Cameroon trail the Black Stars in that order on the continental ranking table.

In the overall rankings, world champions Spain still hold onto top spot despite losing 59 points.

And they are followed by the Netherlands with Germany edging Brazil to the third place.

The significant changes on the table have been influenced by the results of the 159 “A” international matches played over the last five weeks both in the African and European continental qualifiers.

Only the men's national team of all the Fifa affiliated countries are considered for the Fifa rankings.
