Ghana Senegal battle at U-20 AFCON: Why Desmond Ofei is not fazed by the champions

Published on: 21 April 2025

One of the most anticipated games in the group phase of the U-20 AFCON competition in Egypt between April 27 and May 18 is Ghana's encounter with reigning champions Senegal.

However, Black Satellites head coach Desmond Ofei is taking the occasion with aplomb professionalism.

“It’s a big match, no doubt,” Ofei admitted. “But we’ll treat it like any other: with respect, focus, and confidence.”

This mindset reveals a key leadership trait - emotional balance. Ofei understands the hype surrounding Senegal, but his focus is inward: preparation, discipline, and execution.

“We’ll execute our tactical plan, stay disciplined, and be fearless in key moments,” he said.

The Ghana-Senegal rivalry at the youth level is full of pride, power, and prestige.

But Ofei is taking a pass on drama. Instead, he's seeing the match as another tactical test in a larger campaign - one that Ghana must go after with maturity.

That mental approach could be Ghana’s biggest weapon. While others may get swept up in the magnitude, Ofei’s team is being groomed to stay grounded, focused, and efficient - especially when it matters most.

The other Group C matches will see Ghana take on DR Congo and the Central African Republic as they seek qualification to the World Cup in Chile later this year.
