Ghana's influential winger Andre Ayew could miss the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury.

The 23-year-old, who plays for French side Marseille, suffered a hamstring injury during training on Wednesday.

Even though the extent of injury is not known the injury has been described by the French media as 'fascial detachment'.

Marseille medical officials say they will have to observe the midfielder for the next five days before deciding whether he can play in this month's tournament in South Africa.

"For the Africa Cup of Nations, we'll see," said Marseille sporting director Jose Anigo when asked about the status of Ayew.

Ayew was expected to join the Black Stars in their training camp in Abu Dhabi on Saturday morning.

The Ghana FA is yet to respond to questions over Ayew's injury who must join the Black Stars camp on the deadline set by FIFA for players to join their national teams before major tournament.

Ayew's absence will be a huge blow for the Black Stars as they fight for their fifth continental title in South Africa.

Ghana have been drawn in Group B where they will face DR Congo, Mali and Niger.
