Ghana to name final AFCON squad today, Waris axed

Published on: 10 June 2019

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah will announce his final squad that will be taking part in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations  tournament in Egypt today with FC Porto striker Abdul Majeed Waris expected to be the major casualty, GHANAsoccernet.com can report.

The gaffer is expected to pull the trigger as he names his final 23-man squad for the continent's flagship football tournament.

There are expected to be some major surprises in the final squad, as he trims his squad before the start of the competition.

GHANAsoccernet.com understands FC Porto striker Abdul Majeed Waris has been yanked from the squad with coach Kwesi Appiah preferring Jordan Ayew.

New York FC's Ebenezer Ofori, Asante Kotoko striker Abdul Fatawu, Hearts of Oak defender Mohammed Alhassan and Numancia ace Yaw Yeboah will be axed from the team.

Iconic striker Asamoah Gyan will keep his place in the team despite his public outburst against the coach for stripping him of the captaincy.

Coach Kwesi Appiah appears to have a fair idea of the kind of players he need to end the country's long wait for an African crown.

The four-time African champions are housed in group F alongside Cameroon, Guinea-Bissau and Benin.

The team will kick start their campaign against Benin on June 25 at the Ismail Sports Stadium.
