Ghana to omit injured players from final World Cup squad

Published on: 19 May 2010

The Ghana Football Association has revealed only fully fit players will be named in the final 23-man squad for next month's World Cup finals in South Africa.

Some  key players including midfielder Michael Essien and John Mensah are injury doubts and racing against time to the fitness battle for the tournament

The Ghana FA came under intense criticisms after defender Shilla Illiasu was picked for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations but never recovered to play in the competition.

With the tournament fast approaching, Nyantakyi says only players who are fit for the full rigors of the tough competition will be named in the final 23 from the provisional 30.

"Let me state that the FA is not going to send injured players to the World Cup and this is one of the lessons we drew from our participation in the last Nations that was held in Ghana and so in Angola we made sure we didn't send injured players," Ghana FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi told Joy FM.

"So any player whose recovery is uncertain or whose recovery will be beyond the World Cup will not be selected but if there's an indication a player will recover around the World Cup, there will be nothing wrong in selecting such a player.

"I spoke to Michael Essien personally yesterday and we are all hopefully by the end of the month we will get the true status of his health."

Thirty players named in the provisional World Cup will begin camping in Paris, France on 24 May before friendly games against Holland and Latvia.

That's most welcome. I think they must also not interefer with the choice of the coach and his technical team. They must be left alone to select the fitter players. We must desist from including players on the basis of sentiments, or relationships, family or otherwise. Only the best is good for Ghana.

players selected must be fully fit.Ghana is having a players which is very strong so ,i,m edging the GFA to look into the selection of the players and also encourage the player to do away with inferiority intention and believe the players the are going to play withe are like them.i strongly have the feeling that if, they play like how they played in in the last edition Ghana will lift the trophy this year.GOD BLESS YOUR HOME LAND GHANA

YOU GUYS ARE FUNNY, TELL ME HOW MANY PLAYERS ARE INJURED IN THE TEAM NOW, ITS MENSAH ALONE, ESSIEN HAS RECOVERED FULLY. HE WAS WAITING TO SEE CHELSEA WIN THE DOUBLE, SO THE ENGLISH MEDIA DONT SLAP HIM SAYING HE IS FIT TO PLAY FOR GHANA BUT DID NOT WANT TO RISK HELPING CHELSEA WIN LAURELS? NYANTAKYI IS ONLY REFERRING TO MENSAH, CUZ THEY KNOW ABOUT ESSIEN FITNESS. MENSAH WILL BE A TALL ORDER, AND THATS WHY KWESI WAS BEATING ABOUT THE BUSH.

Mr. GFA Chairman. please dont be a Konongo Kaya. IF U WANT TO CARRY,carry it if u cant live. Because i dont undestand your point that a player can recover in time or not. are u afraid to drop some big names. Be a man not a boy. remember there is adifference between boys and men. example of a man is DUNGA droped ronaldinho and co. example of a boy is Milo whoo cant drop Appiah and co.

ITS GOOD THE FA IS CONTEMPLATING OF TAKING ONLY FIT AND STRONG PLAYERS. WHAT I BELIEVE IS THAT ALL THE PLAYERS THERE CAN RISE TO THE OCCASION AND PERFORM THEIR OUT MOST BEST IF GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY, EXCEPT HAMIDU DRAMANI, WHO HAS LOST SELF CONFIDENCE, JUDGING FROM HIS RECENT PERFORMANCE IN ANGOLA. THANK YOU AND DON'T FORGET , A LIMPING DOG IS BETTER THAN A DEAD LION.
